Abstract

We will explore the application of bio-sensors to the marine environment using the detection of cortisol as an exemplar. This work builds on experience at SRI and elsewhere and will meet current needs of the aquaculture industry. Little is known about the operation of biosensors in marine conditions. The subject is of generic importance for a wide range of marine sensing applications connected with monitoring and sustainable exploitation of marine resources. Biosensors will be based on readily available antibodies and established technologies such as a piezoelectric micro-balance or surface plasmon resonance. Research is needed to interface the bio-sensing element to the transducer, and ensure it functions with sufficient sensitivity in a marine environment. The transducer will be built into an automatic sensor system. This will require techniques for collecting samples, normalising results for fish residency, regenerating the bio-sensing surface, and interpreting results.
