Abstract

The aim of this research is to address the relationship between soil microbial activity and the complex and heterogeneous soil environment. We expect to advance our understanding on issues of environmental concern including greenhouse gas emmission from soil, bioremediation of contaminated land and leaching of pathogenic microorganisms. We shall adopt a mechanistic pore-scale modelling approach to describe and predict microbial activities as a function of soil physical conditions. Specific objectives are to model nitrogen and carbon transformations at differing matric potentials and water contents, to model the distribution and dispersal of micro-organisms in soil pore-networks at differing matric potential and water contents, and to model the microbial response to soil water retention hysteresis. Experimental data sets for model validation will be derived from the literature, collaborative links and in house measurements of soil physical properties and soil respiration.
