Abstract

The project is concerned with developing tools for data mining, with particular reference to spatially structured biological data sets. Soil data, remote sensor data and data from precision agriculture will be of principal interest. The objective of the project is to evaluate methods of pattern recognition and spatial feature extraction for identifying key features in data sets, and to develop methods for model validation and inference which avoid the problem of competition bias - a key criticism of the data mining philosophy. We will proceed by identifying a few large datasets from SRI or external collaborators and will identify questions which the practitioner might hope to answer through interrogation of a large database. The comparative performance of different methods for extracting information will then be evaluated. In the medium to long term our objective is to develop expertise in data mining relevant to the broader interests of biology-based industries.
