Abstract
Earlier research at SRI (including work funded by a ROPA) has shown that inelastic scattering of x-rays has potential as a means of inspection for detecting foreign bodies, internal defects and damage in food or horticultural products. Images formed by x-rays scattered within the product appear to have significant advantages over transmission imaging for non- homogeneous complex samples. The work has benefited from collaboration with the medical physics department at UCL. The objective of this project is to initiate the development of an x-ray scatter imaging device for the agricultural and food industries.
