Abstract

This project aims to formulate, implement and validate models of fluctuations in the concentrations of tracer- particles dispersing in turbulent flows of interest to the biological and environmental sectors. The research is relevant to a large number of practical situations in the agri-food sector such as the effective use of pesticides, the contamination of food products during processing, and dispersion of particulates in and around buildings (stores, livestock buildings, greenhouses etc). It thus falls within the remit of the Agri- Food Committee, especially the Agriculture in the Environment, Food Manufacturing, and Microbiological Food Safety and Preservation Programmes. It aligns with the Foresight Clean Processing Technology priority. An understanding of particle concentration fluctuations in turbulent flows will be relevant to a number of agri- food industry problems and processes, such as food hygiene, crop spraying, and aerosol dispersion, identified by the SRI Business Focus Groups. Links with biologists will allow us to identify scientific targets for work on specific topics, and to examine the biological factors affecting airborne dispersion of, for example, microorganisms and pests. SRI already has experience of working closely with the food industry and in LINK programmes.
