Abstract

The recent advances in both the theory and computation of image analysis methodologies as well as emerging sensors open up a wide range of new application areas. This is very relevant to agriculture and agri-food industries, where the images represent complex objects with no fixed shape, texture, or size and there is no control of the illumination conditions for all outdoor scenes. In this project, we are developing new algorithms suitable for the processing of images of these complex biological objects. Applications to the automatic separation of crops from weeds using morphological features will be investigated. Research on texture analysis at both the macro- and microscopic scales is another important topic. We also hope to develop links with other BBSRC groups and attract industrial partners to transfer our research. The project is relevant to the BBSRC Agri-Food Committee themes of engineering appropriate to agri-food and the efficiency of processes in production, manufacture etc.
