Abstract

Genetic maps of livestock are now sufficiently dense that whole genome studies can locate QTLs for traits of agricultural interest. For gene-dense maps the 'positional- Candidate-Gene' approach is an effective method of trait-gene identification. For gene-poor maps, e.g. in livestock, comparative mapping is a way to gain information from these gene-rich maps. The aim of this project is to map conserved markers to construct a comparative map based on human and chicken genome data. We will map 'Conserved Sequence Tags - CSTs', a generic marker based on genes and other conserved genomic sequences, that will facilitate comparisons with other vertebrates. All information will be stored in the 'Chicken Genome Database', with links to 'The Comparative Animal Genome Database'.
