Abstract

Disease resistance traits pose a particular problem to geneticists as they contravene crucial asumptions made in quantitative genetic theory. In particular, animals are not independent of each other in their expressions of resistance and there is an interrelationship between host genotype for resistance and disease epidemiology. This impacts on decision-making processes in disease genetics. This project addresses these issues. The objectives are (i) to develop a general theoretical framework combining quantitative genetics and epidemiology theory, (ii) to develop strategic epidemiological models describing specific disease scenarios, including (a) nematode infections, (b) viral epidemics and (c) 'continuous challege' infections, and (iii) to develop advanced genetic management strategies for these three disease scenarios.
