Abstract

Maps of highly informative markers are now virtually complete for all major livestock species. The exploitation of these maps will depend heavily upon the use of appropriate quantitative genetic technology for the detection and exploitation of quantitative trait loci. This project has as its targets: 1) Further development of QTL mapping technology for outbred populations, linking with work at the University of Edinburgh, and work at Roslin on Gibbs Sampling. 2) Use of markers to aid selection through introgression of new genes and selection from synthetic populations, linking with work at the University of Reading, and other work at Roslin. 3) Analysis of QTL mapping data generated in-house and by international collaborators in pig and chicken mapping projects and in forest trees. Outputs from the project will be improved methods and computer software for analysing experimental and breeding industry data. This project addresses generic SET priorities in areas of processing biological data and building businesses from biology and genetics . It addresses ANRE SET priorities in providing underpinning technology for several areas including animal and plant biotechnology, better plant and animal products and improved technology for the utilisation of forest products.
