Abstract

The programme described aims to utilize the established method for production of transgenic chickens for the production of hens expressing foreign proteins, using the lysozyme gene to direct expression to the oviduct. The ovum manipulation and chick embryo culture method will be adapted to form the basis of experiments to develop nuclear transfer technology in birds. Basic experiments to investigate the role of the chicken vasa gene homologue and BMP growth factors in primordial germ cell specification and development will be initiated.
