Abstract
The joint study of gene expression and molecular markers on a segregating population has been coined eQTL mapping or Genetical genomics. This field has great potential to help fill the gap between positional (mapping) information and functional information (i.e. the QTL effect on a trait) by identifying gene expression QTL that underlie QTL with phenotypic effect. It may help in many of our projects to identify genes underlying QTL. Combining gene-expression with QTL information in poultry has so far been limited to examples where QTL are mapped in a cross between two extreme lines while gene expression differences are quantified between the two founder lines. The location of differentially expressed genes is subsequently compared to that of QTL for the trait of interest, with co-location of a QTL and a differentially expressed gene marking that gene as a good positional candidate gene for the QTL. However, although this may be effective for cis regulated loci (where the QTL maps to the same location as the gene for which it controls expression) it will not be for trans regulated loci (where the QTL controls expression of a locus or loci elsewhere). We will perform a study that focuses directly on gene expression differences related to the genotype at a marked QTL as a pilot for a more comprehensive eQTL studies in poultry.
