Abstract

My role is to coordinate and manage a portfolio of research projects on the genetics and genomics of livestock immunity and disease resistance. The aim of the CSG programme is to focus on two major themes. First, by exploiting the Roslin Institute RoBoGen herd, QTL for immune traits will be mapped. Uniquely the interactions between genes controlling immune response and genes controlling performance traits will be investigated in cattle. Second, the genetic basis for breed differences in resistance to a protozoan parasite of cattle will be explored. Current evidence suggests that macrophage control of cytokine production is the key. Phenotypic and functional differences in macrophages from both breeds will be investigated using a variety of approaches, exploiting a bovine immune-focused microarray, developed in an externally funded grant.
