Abstract
Understanding mechanisms regulating folliculogenesis is a key aspect in the design of procedures for regulating animal production systems. This programme of work addresses this issue by providing information on molecular mechanisms regulating two key events in the life of a follicle, namely the initial recruitment of a primordial follicle into the growing pool and the selection of a dominant follicle. Genes involved in regulating these events will be identified using DNA microarrays and PCR based cDNA subtraction libraries. Once identified the genes will be characterised by in situ hybridization and the regulation of their expression examined in primary cultures of granulosa and theca cells. The identification of new genes regulating folliculogenesis is a central theme of this proposal, their identification will open up opportunities for the development of novel technologies for controlling reproduction.
