Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to increase understanding of neuroendocrine mechanisms that depress the function of gonadotrophin releasing hormone neurones in poultry. The ARK genomics chicken neuroendocrine hypothalamic cDNA microarray will be expanded by the addition of cDNAs derived from the chicken hypothalamus enriched to represent genes involved in the depression of GnRH neuronal function. These will be obtained from a subtractive hypothalamic EST library derived from laying and incubating hens. A profile of genes showing changes in expression will be obtained by interrogating the microarray using labeled cDNA representing hypothalamic mRNA from laying and incubating hens QTL for incubation behaviour will be identified and comparative genomics will be used to establish whether genes showing changes in expression on the microarray are present at the QTL
