Abstract
Genetic maps of chickens are now sufficiently dense for whole genome studies to locate QTL for traits of agricultural and biomedical interest. We have developed marker sets and the hardware/software/databases for QTL maping in large resource populations. Mapping populations based on broiler/layer and fat/lean lines have been used to define over 40 QTL for a wide range of traits. The aim of this project is to both develop and exploit genomic tools to map and identify trait-genes for traits of economic and biomedical interest in the chicken. There are three major objectives: (1) to build a genome toolkit for agricultural and biomedical applications in the chicken; (2) to map QTL and identify trait-genes for traits of economic (egg production, osteoporosis and immune response) and biomedical interest (talpid3 and animal models of metabolic disorders in human); and (3) to establish molecular approaches to identify and test candidate genes at QTL, using fatQTL mapping from a cross between diverent lines selected for plasma very low desity lipoprotein concentration.
