Abstract
The objective of this project are: Develop a synthesis of analytical and sampling based procedures to allow estimation of multivariate genetic parameters. Develop more efficient ways of fitting spline models by taking account of sparser parameterizations. In a previous grant it has been shown how to use analytical and sampling methods to estimate multivariate genetic parameters. All methods have difficulty dealing with large sets of multivariate data. The analytical techniques effort essentially increase with the cube of the product of the number of records and number of variates considered. The sampling techniques are more linear in effects, but it can require a large number of samples to give acceptably small standard errors. It is intended to investigate a synthesis of these methods. The methods will be tested on dairy cattle test day yield data. A flexible spline model will be investigated. It is anticipated that an alternative form of paramerterization of the spline model will need developing. There are eseentially 4 stages: Develop methodology for uncorrelated random effects. Extend to deal with collerated effects included related animals. Develop algorithms for fitting splines in a sparser way. Apply to data and optimize parameterization. The last stage will probably require as much effort as the first three.
