Abstract

This project concerns the coordination and management of a portfolio of research projects in farm animal genomics with emphasis on pigs. The aim of this programme is to understand the genetic control of traits of economic and biological importance. The efficacy of the comparative positional candidate gene approach to identify trait genes will be evaluated through the search for genes (on SSC8) that influence reproductive performance and a disease resitance gene on SSC13. These studies are concerned with establishing links between the genome and function - i.e. functional genomics. Preparatory work will be carried out as a prelude to major programmes to develop expressed sequence tags (ESTs) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for pigs and to establish microarray technology for expression profiling in pigs.
