Abstract

This is a collaborative project between the John Innes Centre (JIC), the Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le développement (CIRAD) and the West African Rice Development Association (WARDA) funded by the Rockefeller Foundation (RF) and CIRAD. This has provided a Fellowship in the area of rice biotechnology, to enhance the RF International Program on Rice Biotechnology. Specifically, the Fellowship will enable the development of an Oryza glaberrima TAC library. This library will benefit marker-assisted selection breeding programs using O. glaberrima as a donor of useful genes for agronomic traits. The library should facilitate the cloning of candidate genes coming from O.glaberrima genome using identified molecular markers that map close to those genes as probes. The TAC clones that hybridize to these markers can be used later to transform plants for genetic complementation. Once the library is constructed, in order to exploit it and as an example of application, we will initiate the first steps of a strategy aiming at cloning the first nematode resistance gene identified in rice, originated from O.glaberrima, which is currently being mapped by us.
