Abstract
Arabidopsis extracts exhibit a selective bactericidal activity that rapidly kills pathovars of Pseudomonas that are non-pathogenic on Arabidopsis but does not affect pathovars for which Arabidopsis is a host. We have used these extracts to screen a P. syringae pv. maculicola genomic library and have isolated novel virulence factors that confer resistance to the bactericide in vitro and is required for symptom development in vivo. We propose to define the molecular structure of the bactericide, characterise the enzymatic activity of the corresponding bacterial virulence factors and identify Arabidopsis mutants affecting the production of this bactericide. This research should provide important insights about the function of these virulence factors in host range determination and the function of this actericide in non-host resistance as a platform for eveloping new ways of developing durable resistance in crop plants.
