Abstract

The aim of this research network was to develop a distributed federation of databases for plant research in the EU. Its objective was to achieve a method of data integration that permits users seamless access to diverse information (a gene, its expression levels, the protein it encodes, genetic resources etc) that are currently distributed across many sites in different formats and with different degrees of currency. The network comprised 8 partners and was coordinated by MIPS in Germany. There were two main challenges in this project: the first was to develop systems for integrating data services over distributed databases, and the second was to develop cutting-edge primary databases of genome-related information. The aim was to provide an integrated service to users such that single queries retrieved a wide range of relevant information. The core architecture of the Planet databases comprised sets of curated relational databases with a connectivity layer driven by BioMOBY web-based services. The JIC developed the ATIDB database (www.atidb.org) in Planet. The database contains genome sequences, annotation data, mapped gene insertions, and Brassica comparative genome data. Current builds contain small RNA signatures. This was configured to work with BioMOBY to generate gene reports containing all information about a gene held in all the Planet federation of databases. This project enabled JIC to develop an outstanding and useful database that is not the foundation for genomics work on crop plants and is an important and popular international resource.
