Abstract
We have recently shown that multiple transgenes integrated into the wheat genome can be separated by large regions (several Mb) of genomic sequence, or can even be on opposite chromosome arms. However, in interphase these multiple sites are generally recruited to or organized at a single site in the interphase chromosome territories. This proposal is aimed at understanding the mechanism underlying the interphase organization; does it reflect a highly conserved interphase chromosome architecture, or is it the result of incorporating novel transgenes and associated sequences into the genome? Such ectopic interactions between multiple transgenes have implications for gene expression, transcriptional silencing, and meiotic homologue pairing.
