Abstract

Brassica carinata is an important crop in its natural environment (Ethiopia) and is increasingly being looked to as an additional oilseed crop, particularly for the hot, dry areas of Southern regions of Europe, where its drought tolerance, post and disease resistance and other characters may make it suitable as an alternative oilseed within the crop rotation. Additionally, it contains many agronomic traits that would be beneficial if they could be incorporated within other oilseeds notably oilseed rape. The project will use molecular fingerprinting and field assessments to describe and characterise accessions of Brassica carinata, contributing data to the European Brassica Database, and providing information essential to its utilisation both as a crop in its own right and as a service of useful traits for the improvement of the other oilseed brassicas.
