Abstract

The accumulating genome sequence, facile gene cloning and functional determination resources of Arabidopsis provide an enormous opportunity for the advancement of plant science. If these resources are to be fully exploited for the improvement of the crops of most importance in the EU, their application to cereals will be essential. By conducting a detailed comparative analysis, we aim to define the extent to which conservation of the organisation of, and structure of genes contained in, homeologous regions of the Arabidopsis and rice genomes may be exploited to facilitate this application.
