Abstract

(1) Determination of cell-specificity of expression of glycine decarboxylase proteins in C3 plants that have been manipulated by transformation in order to change the cell-specific expression of the enzyme. The aim is to convert C3 plants to C3-C4 intermediate plants. (2) Isolation of promoters for genes encoding glycine decarboxylase from C3 and C3- C4 species of Moricandia, a close relative of Brassica crops. Study of regulation of promoter expression using reporter gene constructs. Study of C3-C4 Moricandia plants transformed to alter the gas exchange phenotype to C3. Objectives are based on understanding a character that may contribute to tolerance of reduced water availability and may be transferable to Brassica crop species.
