Abstract

Disease levels of wheat varieties re determined not only by genes for disease resistance but also by other genes that enable plants to escape or tolerate infection. Precise mapping populations are being developed and screened to determine the genetic control of disease escape and disease tolerance mechanisms. Resistance genes will be associated with diagnostic tagging molecular markers to enable their selection in segregating breeding populations thus improving the efficiency of selecting new varieties able to escape or tolerate infection.
