Abstract
Wheat is the most important cereal grown in the UK. Unfortunately, in terms of molecular breeding, it is also the most difficult. Current wheat molecular markers such as RFLPs, AFLPs and SSRs, are limited to gel-based technologies. In this proposal we intend to utilise the highly polymorphic flanking regions of existing microsatellite markers to develop allele specific oligonucleotides. In turn these ASOs will be exploited in the development of a DNA genotyping chip and MALDI-TOF analysis to characterise wheat genotypes or varieties. The sequences developed by this programme will be of considerable academic and commercial interest.
