Abstract

Participatory plant breeding will be applied to a range of crosses, most involving Kalinga III as one parent, and the effectiveness of the participatory approach evaluated. Some crosses, such as Kalinga III x IR64, are targeted for a range of situations including upland, lowland and irrigated conditions. The end products from these crosses in both eastern and western India and Nepal will be tested for AFLP fingerprint linkage blocks to identify farmer-preferred genomic regions and regions that determine adaptation to the contrasting environments used for selection. Crosses will be initiated for a further selection cycle. Progeny from a wide cross of Oryza sativa x O. glaberrima will also be evaluated and genomic regions of O. glaberrima identified for introgression into farmer preferred sativa varieties. QTLs for root growth and drought resistance traits have been introduced into Kalinga III from Azucena by back crossing and marker assisted selection (MAS). Selected lines will be assessed by farmers for traits such as straw strength and grain quality. Selected BC3F2 plants will be screened for root traits to confirm that the QTLs are present and effective. Crosses will be initiated to pyramid root trait QTLs in single genotypes.
