Abstract

To deploy existing mapped microsatellites of wheat and barley to create map-based DNA profiles of the major wheat and barley cultivars. For each species more than 500 cultivars will be genotypes with a minimum of 50 barley or wheat microsatellites. The resulting database will catalyse a major shift in the conceptual analysis of cereal breeding away from phenotypic to genotypic evaluation of cultivar development. In addition to providing a retrospective analysis of cultivar production the results will also facilitate the deployment of molecular breeding strategies. The project should allow us to identify regions of the genome commonly selected and associated with performance in specific environments, for example low or high rainfall, intensive or sustainable husbandry regions, metal tolerances, different disease profiles. Also to identify the 'source' genotype of these key chromosome segments. Also to identify key recombinants within these regions carried by modern varieties. These will help pinpoint the key genes and provide a choice of parental material for future programmes.
