Abstract

Detailed maps of pearl millet, Pennisetum glaucum, have now been completed at JIC and a number of key agronomic traits have been mapped. These include downy mildew resistance and the domestication syndrome. Marker technology has been transferred for use by ICRISAT plant breeders. The pearl millet genome is of an adequately small size to contemplate gene isolation by map-based cloning. A pre-requisite is a large insert library and efficient genetic transformation in order to carry out complement studies. In this project we will be making a comprehensive BAC library, physically mapping regions containing key genes and developing transformation for eventual tests of genes
