Abstract

To overcome the problems associated with the large- scale production of immunologically active complexes, methods for their expression in plants will be developed. Autonomously replicationg virus- based vectors will be used to express the proteins of interest. Such vectors offer a convenient route for the expression of high levels of antigens in plants. Immune protection against coronaviruses is mediated by the spike (S) protein. The protection induced by the full-length S protein, or selected antigenic domains thereof, coupled to carrier molecules for tissue-specific targeting, expressed in plants using recombinant viruses will be determined. Extracts from plants expressing immuno- complexes will be used for the oral immunisation of experimental animals, thereby targeting the antigens to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) in order to induce protective mucosal immunity.
