Abstract

Cytogenetic research, particularly in the last 50 years, has produced and continues to produce a considerable number of precisely defined genetic stocks especially for wheat which constitutes the most widely grown crop in the UK and throughout the world. These stocks include: aneuploids; inter-varietal substitutions; single chromosome recombinant lines; alien addition, substitution and translocation lines and amphiploids. This project maintains the world's most comprehensive collection of these stocks, many of which arose from the Centre's research programme, but also stocks from other world- wide programmes. The project also maintains a range of wild species related to wheat. The stocks form the basis of a wide array of programmes aimed at understanding wheat genetics, physiology and molecular biology and have been widely used to detect new sources of disease resistance, stress resistance and quality.
