Abstract

In this project, conditions will be established for the genetic transformation of cowpea lines. The target genes for transforming into cowpeas are the structural genes of two potyviruses, cowpea aphid- borne mosaic and blackeye cowpea mosaic viruses. These viruses of agronomic importance in central Africa. To this end the viruses will be purified and the coat protein genes characterised before insertion into expression cassettes for introduction into cowpea. Transgenic cowpeas will be assessed for their copy number insertion, levels of transgene expression, and virus resistance.
