Abstract

This project brings together two established collaborative groups from East Africa and the UK to forge an interdisciplinary research network combining the expertise of epidemiologists, field veterinarians, virologists and wildlife biologists to carry out, for the first time, a comprehensive study of the dynamics of endemic foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). The project integrates analytical and diagnostic advances to address basic and strategic questions relating to the epidemiology and control of endemic FMD, which despite having widespread impacts on livestock and rural livelihoods throughout sub-Saharan Africa, remains scientifically neglected.
