Abstract

The aim of the current proposal is to identify genes (and products) of S. uberis and the bovine host that play an essential role in disease pathogenesis that could be exploited in the future control of bovine mastitis. This will be achieved by fulfilling the following objectives: 1. Determine phenotypic and genotypic differences between defined virulent and avirulent strains of S. uberis; 2. Determine differences in the host response following challenge with defined virulent and avirulent strains of S. uberis; 3. Production and in vivo analysis of the virulence of mutants of S. uberis 0140J that carry mutations within genes encoding external products that differ in virulent and avirulent strains.
