Abstract
The objective of the grant is to gain an insight into "Barriers to cross-species infection" which protect hosts from viral infection. In particular we hope to study the interaction of viruses with their natural hosts and with species in which they have the potential to emerge, although model systems will be employed in the initial studies. The work is of relevance to an understanding, not only of cross-species infection between animals, but also of zoonotic infections. We hope to achieve a better understanding the effects of pathogens on the host i.e. to ask questions concerning persistence in the host, the molecular determinants of virulence of the pathogens concerned and the innate mechanisms resistance of the host to infection. The project will also develop post-genomics technology to achieve a better understanding of the host-pathogen relationship and exploits the recent developments in reverse genetics technology for negative strand viruses to address these important questions. The project is held in collaboration with colleagues at Queen¿s University, Belfast and St Andrew¿s University and it is represents a significant step forward in capacity building in the skills base dealing with the threat of pathogenic viruses and integrates work being carried out in Universities with that of the Institute for Animal Health.
