Abstract

Pestivirus infection and persistence in the foetus resulting in the birth of persistently infected animals is correlated with a failure to activate the innate anti-viral response to infection of the host. Our recent collaborative work linked BVDV infection with the inhibition of a key transcription factor in interferon induction, IRF-3. Our proposed studies will involve the preparation of reagents to study interferon induction for use in cattle and pigs, a detailed dissection of pathway that virus infection of cells normally induces interferon in pestivirus infected cells, which virus polypeptides are involved in the inhibition of interferon production, and the generation of designed engineered virus to study its behaviour in cultured cells.
