Abstract

Several national-level programmes have been established that aim to control scrapie, a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) of sheep. Approaches differ among countries, but include genetic testing and culling in affected farms only or both affected and unaffected farms, restrictions on the use of susceptible breeding stock, preclinical testing for infected sheep and varying approaches to surveillance. This project aims to develop a modelling framework, based on combining within-flock and between-flock models, to compare these strategies for efficacy and to help understand why they work, if they do. Specifically within the UK, the project will investigate flock-level risk factors for scrapie, changes in the prevalence of the disease, and the genotype patterns of different sectors of the sheep industry.
