Abstract

Eimeria are major pathogens of livestock, closely related to parasites that cause serious diseases in man and animals, such as Plasmodium and Cryptosporidium. Sequencing of the 60Mb E.tenella genome is progressing rapidly and the project requires a curator to annotate assembled data and maintain a user-friendly E.tenella database using a generic structure developed at the Pathogen Sequencing Unit (PSU). The curator will be based at the IAH, alongside Eimeria experts, but will spend a significant amount of time at the PSU learning bioinformatic skills. Annotation will be supported by sequencing ESTs from a range of parasite developmental stages and the assembly of a comprehensive "training" set of 200 genes for gene-finding algorithms.
