Abstract

Strain characterisation of TSE agents from a range of species, to determine extent of agent strain variation in natural diseases, by transmission to rodents and serial passage in rodents. TSE strains will be characterised from their disease characteristics in rodents (incubation periods, lesion profiles). To explore links between natural TSEs in different species, by comparing characteristics of TSE strains isolated in rodents. To determine of effects on strain identity of passage of TSEs though different host species or genotypes. Based on above studies, to determine biological basis of TSE strain variation. To develop a range of TSE models based on the characteristics of disease in different combinations of TSE strain and host. To maintain serially rodent passaged isolates of characterised TSE strains for the production of infective material for use in other studies within the Institute and elsewhere. To biologically clone, by serial passage at limiting infective dose, rodent passaged isolates of characterised TSE strains for use in other studies.
