Abstract
MAbs will provide consistent reagents which will help to develop pan-specific and serotype specific serological tests for confirmation of FMD. The antigenic characteristics of any field isolate could be defined by the use of MAbs and this would help to select the vaccine strain that is closely related to the field isolate if vaccination is to be used as an adjunct to other control measures. Any significantly different isolate can then be sequenced at the nucleotide level to assist in its epidemiological tracing.
