Abstract

The general purpose of this project is to develop a new animal model very susceptible to TSE and able to differentiate scrapie from BSE. Accordingly to the experts comments indicated in the evaluation summary report, the present project will focus on three issues. Namely: 1. to clarify the potential of the bank vole to function as a very sensitive model for TSE agents' detection; 2. to clarify the potential of the bank vole for strain typing and differentiating between scrapie and BSE; 3. to investigate some aspects of the species barrier looking, in particular, into the significance of PrP amino acid sequence.
