Abstract

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a family of transmembrane proteins that play an important role in recognizing microbial pathogens and triggering an appropriate immune response. The aim of this project is to define the role of TLR7, which is one of a pair of tandemly duplicated genes in mammals implicated in the immune response to small anti-viral compounds, in the recognition of chicken microbial pathogens. Large chicken genomic clones containing TLR7 have been isolated and are currently being commercially sequences. The first stage of the project will invovle analysis of the sequence data to determine whether other TLRs lie in the vicinity of TLR7 and to generate tool for further characterisation of these genes. The second stage of the project will be directed at functional analysis with the particular aim of identifying the microbial stimuli necessary to activate signalling of TLR7 and any related genes.
