Abstract

Previous studies involving the oral dosing of sheep with BSE (SE1424 and SE1428) have produced incubation periods in susceptible ARQ/ARQ sheep which so far have shown wide variation (553 to 1073 days), with a number of sheep surviving beyond 1200 days post-challenge. The fact that less than 100% of BSE infected sheep go on to develop clinical signs reduces the amount of information produced by each experiment. The purpose of this study is therefore (a) to establish whether the age at challenge has an effect on the incubation period of disease(b) to establish whether challenge at very young ages results in a higher percentage of animals developing clinical signs (c) to establish whether different dose rates affects disease incidence.
