Abstract

The aim of this project is to find out if passage of scrapie and of BSE through various species will change the phenotype of the diseases. The project uses transgenic mice expressing sheep or bovine PrP genes as models for these species and compares the results with mouse passage through mouse lines of differing PrP genotype. The results of this study will be relevant to the question of whether, if BSE has infected UK sheep, it will retain its characteristics which allow us to identify it easily or whether it will be changed by transmission between animals and across species barriers.
