Abstract

Following our identification of CD28 in chickens, we have used it to clone the cDNA for the first avian member of the B7 family. The sequence of this molecule is more similar to LICOS than to CD80 or CD86, but unlike LICOS in mammals, it does bind chicken CD28 under physiological conditions. This leads to the hypothesis that there may be a different complement of B7 family molecules in chickens and mammals, with different sets of functions. The purpose of this project is to evaluate this hypothesis. This will involve detailed characterisation of the expression of the molecule in cells and tissues; evaluation of its capacity to provide costimulation signals and induce cytokine expression; identification of other molecules of both the B7 and CD28 families.
