Abstract

This project aims to improve knowledge of how the immune system of the pig responds to infectious organisms, principally by providing tools and reagents which define the function of cells of the porcine immune system. The information generated will facilitate investigations into infectious diseases of pigs in general, and into specific pathogens in particular. There are many diseases of intensively reared pigs which are routinely treated with antibiotics. This indiscriminate dispersal of antibiotics in preference to the employment of vaccines is likely to become increasingly socially and politically unacceptable. Vaccine development, however demands a thorough knowledge of the immune system.
