Abstract

Dendritic cells are pivotal to the induction of primary immune responses and are the only antigen presenting cells capable of initiating an immune response in na¿ve animals. An understanding of their function is necessary for the development of strategies aimed at modulating the immune response and protecting animals from disease. A number of distinguishable sub-populations of dendritic cells have been identified in the different lymph and body tissues of cattle. These cells vary in the way in which they take up antigens and in their ability to stimulate T-cell responses. Differences in the biology of the dendritic cell sub-sets and the molecular basis for these are being analysed.
