Abstract

Emergency vaccination induces protection within 2-4 days. The effector mechanisms that afford this are unclear. Beside humoral parameters this project aims to investigate other characteristics of this rapid protective response through a collaboration between other EU Member State Research Establishments. Drawing a wider range of skills, factors including cytokines and the roles of immunology, important cell populations will be examined using the porcine model. The influence of different routes of immunisation, different forms of FMD antigen, and different formulations will also be investigated, together with the applicability of tools such as monoclonal antibodies and synthetic peptides in identifying these effector responses.
