Abstract

The main objectives (in collaboration between Moredun and NPU) is to determine by bioassay in mice whether the BSE pathogen/infectious agent replicates in bovine brain cell lines in culture. Evidence of replication would confirm that bovine brain cell lines provide an authentic and economical model for BSE-infected cattle. Persistently infective bovine brain cell lines would be of considerable value in further investigation of BSE pathogenesis in a controlled environment. Testing of drugs or metabolites which stop further spread of the agent would provide information on the mechanisms of entry into or exit from brain cells and this knowledge could be beneficial for treatment of CD.
