Abstract

In this project we are investigating issues relevant to pathogenesis of TSEs after peripheral exposure and the potential for intervention in mouse TSE models. We are investigating PrP expression in peripheral tissues of uninfected embryos, neonates and adults, with an emphasis on the lymphoid system and gastrointestinal tract. This will suggest when particular tissues or cells become capable of supporting replication, as well as suggesting the normal function of PrP. We are also investigating the innervation of lymphoid tissues and the gut in uninfected mice of different ages and in mouse strains that show differences in responses to peripheral TSE challenge. We are using these models in preliminary investigations of potential therapeutic or prophylactic treatments.
